About Charlotte

Charlotte Shyllon

Hi, I'm Charlotte Shyllon, and as a black person living in the UK I have experienced racism. In my personal life, I have to deal with its daily impacts, while raising my children with the knowledge, confidence and resilience to be able to hold their heads up high too. In a work context, I have to navigate these experiences thoughtfully, while staying confident, focused and motivated.
I write for pleasure, enjoying the creative process involved in the type of poetry I write. The medium of poetry is one that I employ to express some of my deepest feelings. I hadn’t shared much of my poetry publicly before 2020. But sometimes you have to stick your head above the parapet. So here goes.

BLACK IN WHITE BY CHARLOTTE SHYLLON

Black in White does not shy away from 'telling it as it is' - in the hope that as we open people's eyes to the stark reality of the racism that many black people often face, we will also help to open minds and wipe out wrong thinking and behaviours.

It is available as a paperback from major online bookstores (click on the logos below to access the book on those websites) or directly from the online store on this website. It is also available in Kindle format.

Black in White contains a mix of poems of different lengths and styles that all tell important stories, designed to bring insight and illumination to the issues they cover. Take a look at the poem titles on the right...

Read excerpts from three of the poems in Black in White...

Life for me is a daily fight!

I want those around me to see the light.

To see my skin colour is different, yes,

But being different doesn’t make me less.

   From 'Don't belittle my battle'

When I get to your desk, I sense your

dismay;

Your smile superficial, just a display.

Your eyes say it all, though your words are polite:

If it were down to you, I’d be out of sight.

 Unlearn the negatives.

 Embrace the positives.

 Kick out out-dated prejudices, racial

 stereotypes, falsehoods.

 Change wrong mind-sets, stinking

 thinking,  bad behaviours.
